"Should I use PojavLauncher or Mojo Launcher?" is probably the most common question from people new to Minecraft: Java Edition on Android. The honest answer has changed over the last two years, because the two projects are in very different states. This article compares them fairly, with the facts we could verify, and tells you how to switch if you decide to.
How they are related
MojoLauncher's own README describes it as "a launcher, based on PojavLauncher". PojavLauncher was the best-known open-source project for running Java Edition on Android and iOS. Several of the developers listed in the Mojo Launcher repository, including artdeell and Mathias-Boulay, also appear in the PojavLauncher history. In other words, Mojo Launcher is a continuation of the same idea with newer technology, not a competitor trying to copy it. Both are licensed under the GNU LGPL v3.
Project status
| MojoLauncher | PojavLauncher | |
|---|---|---|
| Repository state | Active, with frequent commits and a public issue tracker | Archived on GitHub, pointing to a successor project |
| Platforms | Android | Android and iOS (in the past) |
| Newest game versions | 26.x supported | Check its own notes |
| Where to get it | GitHub and Google Play | GitHub (archived) |
An archived repository can still work for the versions it supported, but it no longer gets fixes. If a new Minecraft release breaks something, nobody will patch it there.
Technical differences in Mojo Launcher
- A real GLFW backend. The Iris release replaced Pojav's custom
lwjgl3glfwlayer with a real GLFW and minimally patched upstream LWJGL. New LWJGL versions install automatically, and each game version gets the one that suits it. That improves compatibility with mods. - Mesa 26.2 with real EGL. Context management moved from OSMesa to a real EGL implementation with Kopper support.
- More renderer choices. Holy GL4ES (which now also runs with ANGLE), LTW, Freedreno for Adreno 5xx+, Turnip driver support for newer Adreno models, and a legacy Zink plugin for Mali.
- Modpack import. Local Modrinth and CurseForge packs can be imported directly.
- Instances replace the old profile system.
- 16K page-size support for newer devices.
Details on each are on the features page and in the Iris release notes.
Which should you use?
Pick Mojo Launcher if
- You want current Minecraft versions, including 26.x.
- You want a project that fixes bugs and answers issues.
- You use heavy modpacks and benefit from newer graphics stacks.
- You like installing from Google Play.
Consider alternatives if
- You are on iOS. Mojo Launcher does not have an iOS version, see Mojo Launcher for iOS.
- You have a device on which the newer renderers misbehave. Try another renderer first, using the best settings guide.
How to switch without losing worlds
- Back up first. Copy the game folder (worlds, resource packs, mods) from your current launcher to a safe place.
- Install Mojo Launcher from the official homepage or Google Play. It installs as a separate app.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account.
- Copy worlds into the new game folder, or import modpacks from
.mrpackor.zipfiles. - Test before deleting the old app.
Worlds use the standard Minecraft format, so they carry over. Mods must match the version and loader you run.
A caution about look-alike sites
Many websites copy Pojav and Mojo names and mix them up. Verify download links against GitHub and Google Play, and read is Mojo Launcher safe. For a high-level introduction, start with what is Mojo Launcher.
