Mods are the main reason people choose Java Edition, and Mojo Launcher is built to run them on Android. This article covers every route: installing a mod loader like Forge or Fabric, adding individual mods, importing complete modpacks and fixing the problems that tend to appear. You will need your own Minecraft: Java Edition account and a reasonably recent phone or tablet.
Understand the pieces
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Mod loader | The framework mods plug into. Forge and Fabric are the two main ones. |
| Mod | A .jar file that adds or changes content. It must match both the loader and the game version. |
| Modpack | A bundle of mods, configs and often a specific version, shared as .mrpack (Modrinth) or .zip (CurseForge). |
| Instance | A self-contained game setup in the launcher with its own version, mods and worlds. |
Route 1: Fabric or Forge with individual mods
- Choose a Minecraft version that your mods support. Check the mod page first, because versions must match exactly.
- Download the loader's installer
.jarfrom the official Forge or Fabric site to your phone. - Run the installer through Mojo Launcher. The launcher supports
.jar-only installers, as its README states. - Select the client installation. A new version entry appears afterwards.
- Add mods. Place the
.jarfiles in themodsfolder of that instance. - Press Play with the new loader version selected.
A more detailed version of these steps is in the Forge and Fabric guide.
Route 2: Import a modpack
Modpacks save you from collecting dozens of files by hand. Since the Iris release, the launcher can import local Modrinth .mrpack and CurseForge .zip packs.
- Download the pack file to your device from Modrinth or CurseForge.
- Import it from the launcher. It creates an instance with the right version and mods.
- Launch the instance and wait. The first start can take a while for large packs.
Check the pack's page for the recommended RAM and be realistic: a huge technical pack that is comfortable on a gaming PC may be too heavy for a mid-range phone. If you need a good starting configuration, use the best settings guide.
Where to find mods safely
- Modrinth and CurseForge are the major repositories.
- The mod's own official page, for loaders and special cases such as OptiFine.
- Avoid random download sites and "mod APKs". A Minecraft mod is a
.jar, never an Android app.
Which mods work well on mobile?
- Performance mods on Fabric help weaker devices.
- Utility mods such as minimaps and inventory helpers are light.
- Shader and rendering mods are the hardest on phones and depend on the renderer. LTW received fixes for Angelica and Create: Aeronautics, and GregTech: New Horizons runs on Zink and Freedreno, according to the release notes, with notes on updating components manually for LTW.
Renderer and mod compatibility
If a mod crashes the game or draws garbage, the renderer is a likely culprit. Try this order: Holy GL4ES, LTW, then Freedreno on Adreno 5xx+ or Zink with the plugin on older Mali devices. The roadmap still lists unresolved issues with the Create mod under LTW, and large texture atlases can distort on GL4ES, so these combinations may need testing. See how to fix lag for more on renderers.
Troubleshooting mod problems
- Game crashes on launch: remove mods in halves until it starts, then add them back one by one.
- "Incompatible mod set": a mod is for the wrong version or loader.
- Missing dependency: many mods need a library mod such as Fabric API. The error message names it.
- Out of memory: raise RAM gradually, keeping room for Android.
- Controls for mod keybinds: add buttons in your layout. See Mojo Launcher controls.
